Why Doesn’t My Invisalign Aligner Fit?

One of the nice things about Invisalign aligners when compared to traditional braces is that most patients find them to be significantly more comfortable to wear. They’re sleek and sit flush with the teeth, meaning that you don’t typically have to deal with your oral appliance rubbing against the lips or cheeks.

However, it’s possible that you might feel like your Invisalign trays don’t really fit, especially when you first get them. Here’s why that may be, and what you ought to do about it.

How Do Invisalign Aligners Typically Fit?

As with any kind of orthodontic treatment, the goal of an Invisalign aligner is to push your teeth into place by applying constant pressure to them. It should therefore be expected for your Invisalign aligners to be tight, and in some ways, anything else should probably raise some red flags.

However, it’s also the case that your aligners need to have gaps in them to contain your teeth once they’ve moved. While these definitely shouldn’t cause your aligners to feel loose, you may notice them when you look closely.

What Should Concern Me About My Invisalign’s Fit?

The fact is that it’s pretty normal for your Invisalign to feel a little uncomfortable at first, and even for you to have trouble seating them fully onto your teeth for a while. If this is what you’re feeling, you should try wearing your aligners for a few weeks and see if the situation improves.

However, if you find that your Invisalign aligner is obviously warped or if it’s falling off often, that could be a sign that there’s substantial damage that warrants replacing your aligner. Talk to your dentist about your experience and they’ll be able to tell you a bit more about whether swapping out your trays is going to be necessary.

What Will Dentists Do If Your Aligner Doesn’t Fit?

If you need a replacement, your dentist will usually tell you to wear your previous set of aligners until your new ones are made. In some situations, however, they might just recommend moving on to the next stage of aligners to make sure that you stay on track.
