8 Healthy Habits to Practice During Quarantine

Happy, healthy family of four at home during quarantineSocial distancing is crucial to slowing the spread of the current COVID-19 pandemic. While it’s a strange and somewhat overwhelming time, many people are viewing quarantine as an opportunity to try new things like learning a new language, teaching their pets new tricks, and baking homemade bread. While there are plenty of good ways to spend your extra time at home, why not make a few simple but important lifestyle changes? Now is an excellent time to focus on these eight healthy habits you may not have thought much about before.

Better Brushing

Did you know that brushing your teeth incorrectly could be doing your smile more harm than good? Your Falls Church dentist recommends practicing a dental routine that includes:

  • Two minutes of brushing twice a day.
  • Brushing with gentle, small, circular motions.
  • Flossing and using mouthwash daily.

Staying Active

You don’t need a gym membership to exercise! Every adult should be active for at least 30 minutes a day, which can look like cleaning, dancing, playing with your children or pets, or online workout classes.

Eating Well

It is more important than ever to avoid mindlessly snacking and stress-eating. To help strengthen your immune system and prevent cavities, limit your munching and eat more:

  • Fibrous, raw vegetables.
  • Fruits, melons, and berries that contain vitamin C.
  • Lean meats and low-fat dairy products.

Staying Hydrated

Remembering to drink enough water can be a challenge when you’re at home all day. Remind yourself to stay hydrated by writing notes, setting timers, or making a game out of it.

Using Trustworthy News Sources

In these unusual times, information is evolving by the hour. Make sure you’re getting the most accurate information by:

  • Relying on trusted news sources like the CDC, the WHO, or your local government.
  • Fact-checking information that seems far-fetched.
  • Avoid misinformation presented by non-experts and social media.

Getting Enough Sleep

Not only does a lack of quality sleep put us in a bad mood, but it can negatively impact the immune system as well. Keep a regular sleeping schedule so that you get at least 8 consecutive hours of sleep daily.

Managing stress

It’s natural to feel anxious during quarantine. Practice managing stress by:

  • Taking care of your physical wellbeing with habits mentioned above.
  • Reducing your exposure to news stories that cover the coronavirus.
  • Occupying your mind with activities like art, music, or meditation.

Staying Connected

Remember, we are all “alone together.” You can stay connected with your loved ones in a variety of ways, including phone calls, post cards, emails, video calls and many more. Communicate your concerns and feelings to trusted friends, family members, personal support groups, and professionals.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed what daily life looks like for many of us. However, taking the time to establish good habits can help you stay healthy throughout and after quarantine.
