Gum Disease Treatment – Falls Church, VA

Visit Our In-Office Periodontist

Falls Church periodontist

Your smile is made up of more than just teeth – there’s also the gum tissue, which supports them and helps them thrive and function. Unfortunately, infection can find its way into this vulnerable area of the mouth at a gradual pace, resulting in periodontal (gum) disease. While gum disease may not seem overtly dangerous at first blush, untreated cases can cause severe, lasting consequences for not only your smile, but your overall health too.

At Purple Plum Dentistry, we take gum health very seriously. Our in-house periodontist makes this type of specialty care very convenient and comfortable. If you are in the greater Washington D.C. area and are in need of assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Scaling & Root Planing

Gum disease occurs in the first place because of plaque and tartar, which are bacteria-filled substances that can accumulate on tooth and gum surfaces over time if the patient isn’t practicing proper oral hygiene. As a result, this tissue becomes swollen and bleeds easily. In order to combat the infection, we will perform scaling and root planing. This non-surgical procedure involves the thorough removal of plaque and tartar from underneath the gum line, followed by the gradual smoothing of the tooth root surfaces.

Antibiotic Therapy

Antibiotic therapy is often recommended as a supplement to scaling and root planing. At Purple Plum we use ARESTIN®, which comes in a powdered form that is placed inside the infected periodontal pockets. The antibiotic will continue to fight off any remaining dangerous bacteria for days and weeks following your procedure, maximizing long-term success. Our goal is to leave your smile as healthy and confident as it can possibly be.
