Root canal therapy may be one of the most notorious dental procedures available today, with many patients becoming worried and fearful when it’s brought up in the dental office. Thankfully, Dr. Kiani and the rest of our Purple Plum team are happy to inform you that this “bad” reputation has been blown out of proportion. In fact, root canals are the ideal method for treating advanced oral infection and preserving natural teeth that otherwise would have to be permanently removed.

Here in Falls Church, we have an in-house endodontist who can address even the most complex root canal cases with precision, comfort, and maximized success. Please contact us today to schedule a first appointment, or if you have any questions.

Do I Need Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy becomes necessary when inflammation and infection is able to reach the inner pulp of a natural tooth. This may happen because of advanced tooth decay or a traumatic injury that exposes this vulnerable area to outside bacteria. Common signs that an infection is present include:

  • Severe pain in a specific tooth
  • Excessive, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold foods, even after the source has been removed
  • Noticeable tenderness when chewing food or touching the tooth surface
  • Strange discoloration (usually darkening) of the tooth enamel

It is important to remember that in some cases, an advanced dental infection will show NO symptoms. That’s just one of many reasons why regular visits to your chosen dental office are essential!

How Does Root Canal Therapy Work?

Model of tooth with root canal damage

Our endodontist will remove the infected pulp from within the tooth’s inner chamber and the root canal(s) with special instruments. This structure will be replaced with a safe, biocompatible substitute and thoroughly sealed so as to minimize further chances of inflammation. As a final step, Dr. Kiani will design a custom-made dental crown or filling that restores the tooth’s full function and natural shape.

Root canal therapy has an exceptionally high success rate, and most treated teeth will be able to stay a part of patients’ smiles for the rest of their lives! We strongly recommend this treatment method over extraction whenever possible.
